When shopping for bathroom mirrors, you’ll frequently encounter IP ratings. Understanding these ratings is essential for selecting a product that’s safe and appropriate for your installation location.

What is an IP Rating?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, a standard defined by IEC 60529. The rating consists of two digits: the first indicates protection against solid particles (dust), and the second indicates protection against water.

IP44 — The Bathroom Standard

IP44 means protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashes from any direction. This is the minimum rating required for mirrors installed in Zone 2 of a bathroom — the area around the sink and vanity, more than 600mm from any water source.

IP54 — Enhanced Dust Protection

IP54 offers limited ingress protection against dust (not completely sealed but sufficient to prevent harmful accumulation) and the same splash protection as IP44. This rating is suitable for mirrors installed in areas with occasional steam exposure.

IP65 — Wet Zone Ready

IP65 indicates complete dust-tight sealing and protection against water jets from any direction. This rating is required for mirrors installed in Zone 1 — areas directly above bathtubs or within shower enclosures. All LUMIÈRE wet-zone models carry this rating.

Bathroom Zones Explained

Bathroom electrical zones are defined as follows:

When in doubt, always choose a higher IP rating than the minimum requirement. It provides an extra margin of safety and ensures your mirror will perform reliably for years to come.
